NEBOSH Updates the International General Certificate for 2026

NEBOSH has announced updates to the International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, with a revised syllabus scheduled for release in 2026. These changes reflect NEBOSH’s ongoing commitment to keeping its qualifications aligned with modern workplace risks, teaching practices, and learner feedback.

Teaching of the updated syllabus will commence on 2 February 2026, followed by the first assessments of the revised qualification on 4 March 2026.

One of the most notable updates involves changes to how NEBOSH administers and marks Unit Two (the practical risk assessment)

Assessment Structure: What’s Changing?

The qualification will continue to be assessed through two units, but each will undergo changes in naming and, for the second unit, assessment method.

Unit One: IG1 → GIC1

  • Renamed to GIC1 (International).
  • Will continue as a 24‑hour scenario‑based assessment.

Unit Two: IG2 → GIC2

  • Renamed to GIC2 (International).
  • Will remain a practical risk assessment, but with important updates:

1. Submission Method

The assessment will now be submitted via the online NEBOSH Assessment Platform, the same way learners submit Unit One.
Learners must upload GIC2 within 10 working days of completing the GIC1 scenario assessment.

2. Marking System

NEBOSH is moving away from the met/not met approach.
Instead, GIC2 will be points‑based, and each learner will automatically receive a mark breakdown document.

  • Pass mark: 60%

3. Results Release

A major improvement for learners:
Both unit results will be released on the same day, exactly 60 working days after the GIC1 assessment.
This means learners will now receive their complete qualification outcome at once, rather than waiting for units separately.
