In line with its commitment to ensuring that learners and industries benefit from the most relevant, modern, and high‑impact safety qualifications, NEBOSH has officially began phasing out the International Technical Certificate in Oil and Gas Operational Safety (IOG).

This strategic decision reflects the evolving needs of global process industries – particularly oil and gas – as safety standards, risk profiles, and regulatory expectations continue to advance.

New Qualification Replacing IOG

The content previously covered under the IOG certificate has now been incorporated into the NEBOSH HSE Certificate in Process Safety Management.
This replacement qualification:

  • Is developed jointly by NEBOSH and the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
  • Provides broad, up-to-date process safety knowledge applicable to ALL process industries, not only oil and gas.
  • Embeds best‑practice principles aligned with modern operational and regulatory expectations.

The new qualification aims to better meet industry needs by equipping learners with relevant process safety competencies that help reduce risk, prevent incidents, and strengthen operational safety culture.

Important Dates for Learners

  • Final enrolment date: 31 March 2025
No new learners can enroll in the IOG qualification after this date.
  • Final assessment date for existing learners: 30 September 2026
This applies to both resit candidates and external learners who have not yet completed their assessment.

We encourage all current learners to plan ahead and complete their studies within the remaining timeframe.
